Carlo Scarpa Samo dining table

Every design enthusiast knows Afra and Tobia Scarpa, the Italian couple behind some of the most iconic designs of the 20th century – the Monk and 121 chairs, the Bastiano sofa, the Africa dining chair… a name that might be less know to some, instead, is that of Carlo Scarpa – Tobia’s father. How come? Well, Carlo Scarpa was first and foremost an architect, who in the latter part of his life also turned his eyes to design, bringing his distinctive touch to the world of furniture.

Take, for example, the present piece: we’re talking of the sculptural Samo table, created for Simon Gavina. The symmetric steps in the massive granite legs are found almost exactly in the Brion Family Memorial, one of Scarpa’s most famous and impressive architectural feats.

The present table, heavy yet very elegant and balanced, is made of granite; it’s preserved in perfect conditions and measures 120 by 180cm, easily seating six people. It’s one of the rarest and most sought after pieces of Italian design from the 20th century, and we are glad to include it in our curated selection.
