The story of Cenedese’s legacy began in 1916 with a young boy, Gino Cenedese, who, at just nine years old, learned the fundamental glassmaking techniques from various Murano masters. After World War II, in 1946, he founded the Gino Cenedese & C. glassworks, which quickly gained international acclaim for its refined craftsmanship. Initially established with esteemed partners—Angelo Tosi, Alfredo Barbini, Gino Fort, and Pietro Scaramal—Cenedese became the sole owner by 1949, leading the company into the twentieth century with vision and dedication.
Over the decades, Gino Cenedese collaborated with renowned Venetian masters and artists, shaping the company’s artistic evolution. In the 1950s, sculptor Napoleone Martinuzzi created a series of bas-relief glass panels depicting female figures, now displayed in the company’s showrooms. Around the same period, painter Luigi Scarpa Croce contributed to developing the now-iconic Sommerso technique, in which layers of colored glass are submerged within one another to create mesmerizing visual effects. Designer Fulvio Bianconi further elevated Cenedese’s reputation by showcasing its works at the 1954 Venice Biennale.
By the late 1960s, artist Harold Stevenson drew inspiration from the Venetian Lagoon, creating sculptures that reflected its natural beauty. In the early 1970s, Venetian artist Antonio da Ross introduced new artistic perspectives, expanding the use of submerged glass techniques such as Contrappunti.
With its commitment to innovation and respect for tradition, Cenedese continues to be a symbol of Murano’s extraordinary glassmaking heritage.
